Each animal is associated with one of the five Chinese elements:

Which Chinese Element is related to your Chinese Horoscope Animal?

When a baby is born its Chinese element sign is used, in addition to animal sign, to reveal his or her character, fortune, ideal partners, lucky colors etc. Chinese astrology plays a very similar role to astrology in western culture which uses the signs of the zodiac. Each Chinese animal sign is associated with one of the five Chinese elements. Once you have found your Chinese animal you can find your Chinese element from the table below:

Chinese Zodiac Animal Signs Chinese 5 Elements (Wu Xing)
Monkeys and Roosters are: Metal element
Tigers and Rabbits are: Wood element
Rats and Pigs are: Water element
Snakes and Horses are: Fire element
Ox’s, Dragons, Sheep and Dogs are: Earth element

For example, if you were born in 1958 your Chinese animal sign is a dog and, using the table above, you can see the dog is an earth element so you would be an “earth dog“. In Chinese astrology, the twelve animals of the Chinese horoscope are directly connected to the Chinese Five Elements. The choice of twelve animals and their order in the table is based on Chinese folklore.

Legend of the Chinese Zodiac

Like all good stories, there are many variations. One of the most popular stories says the Jade Emperor (Heavenly Grandfather) called a meeting and decreed the years on the calendar would be named after the animals in the order they arrived at the meeting. In other variations the meeting was called by the Yellow Emperor, Buddha or god. The meeting was called a race rather than a meeting in many variations and other animals, including a cat and an elephant, are often mentioned.
